Stated Meeting – Oct. 13th, 2022

Mt. Hood Lodge No. 32 met on October 13th at the Barberton Grange for our Stated Communication on the 1st Degree. The building was alive with Brother’s reconnecting and sharing laughs early in the evening. As we headed to the dining room, introductions were given, including a special visitation from WB Franklyn G., Worshipful Master of Little Falls Lodge No. 176. O.E.S. Henry Wentworth provided an Octoberfest-themed meal of Bratwurst, sweet & sour cabbage, German potatoes, and dark German chocolate cake. In addition, they announced an upcoming Mason Appreciation Dinner on October 19, and are looking forward to hosting Brothers and loved ones from all Lodges in the District. $132 dollars was then collected for our Random Act of Kindness (RAK) fund, which was allocated during the meeting. During dinner, attendees enjoyed a presentation focused on Stoicism in the Modern World.

Our entertainment for the evening started with Zeno of Citium’s origins in Citium, Cyprus. His early philosophical teachings in a local Athenian ‘stoa’, or covered marketplace, led to the development of Stoicism. The presentation included the foundations of Stoicism; Logic, Physics, and Ethics, as well as the two pillars of Stoicism; the four Cardinal Virtues and the dichotomy of control. Emphasis was given to the personal journal of Marcus Aurelius, now titled “Meditations”. This personal journal is available online for free from many sources. Discussions of this journal led us to better a better understanding of Stoicism in the Modern World, which included Memes and Monarchs. The educational piece concluded by identifying Zeno of Citium in Raphael’s School of Athens.

Gentle music provided by Brother David H. greeted Brothers as we moved into the lodge room for our Stated Meeting. The Master’s Message called on Brothers to practice Masonry in a way all men could agree and cited Anderson’s 1723 Constitutions for inspiration. A brief practice of the Funeral Grand Honors led into a touching in-lodge remembrance for Brother Virgil Myers. Kind words were spoken and a better appreciation of our Brother’s rich life and experiences were gained. A heavy weight was felt in the room as Brother Sage extinguished a candle in remembrance of our Brother’s passing.

Moving forward, communications were given including a note from our Grand Master advising caution when providing in-lodge films and media. The Treasurer’s report then led to a presentation of our proposed lodge budget for the 2022/2023 Masonic year, which was approved unanimously. A moment was given to reflect on joy, sickness, and distress with many moving comments given. While we have seen much loss in the fraternity over these many months, it was heart-warming to hear of anniversaries and achievements being celebrated. Then, Brother Jerramie R., the recipient of the last meetings’ RAK funds, reported how those funds were used. Someone close to him was dealing with excessive expenses and having difficulty providing for their family. Brother Jerramie used the funds to completely refill their pantry with food. Well done Brother!

During Proficiency updates, VW Dave E. reported steady progress from Brother Connor G. on his MM catechism. Brother Sage B. reports that Brother David H. is reading the FC posting lecture well, and Brother Jerramie R. is reporting Brother Justin G. is making quick work of the EA catechism. However, he did note his penniless condition at the meeting. Brother Justin was given the RAK funds from the evening to distribute in a charitable manner. Brother Alex B. was excited to report Brother Will C.’s proficiency status and his eagerness to prove up! We will be providing that opportunity at our upcoming Special Meeting on October 27th. Two petitions were then read, one from Brother Norvin C. for reinstatement and the other from WB Todd E. for plural membership. Investigation committees have been assigned, and we are eagerly awaiting their results!

Old business revolved around discussion of our recent events; Installation of Officers, 5th Thursday Fun Night, and the initiation of Brother Justin G. Positive comments were given for all three, along with some helpful ideas for improving them in the future. New business included announcing the theme for our Stated Meetings during the ensuing year. We will be exploring philosophers found in the School of Athens, and highlighting these proto-Brothers’ contributions to Western Philosophy.

After, Brother Sage B. provided an excellent presentation on the Timeline of Greek Philosophy. Artful PowerPoint slides assisted in showcasing the Seven Sages of ancient Greek philosophy, including maps outlining where they taught and some background on each. Emphasis was given to Thales of Miletus (c. 624 B.C. – 546 BC) who was the source for the engraving over the Temple of Apollo, “Know Thyself | Nothing in Excess | Surety Brings Ruin”. Continuing, schools of philosophy were outlined, starting in the 7th Century BC and carrying through to the 2nd Century AD.  The conclusion of the presentation focused on the School of Athens artwork itself, and a few tantalizing observations within the painting eluding to a more esoteric understanding of the work being possible. Thunderous applause was given as Brother Sage concluded, as the presentation was very informative and entertaining!

A new item had been added to the agenda, “In Case You Missed It”, in order to highlight events within the District. First, we welcomed Brothers Britten E. and Jerry V. into our Fraternity, newly initiated Brothers from Washington Lodge No. 4, as well as recognized Brother Tim H. as the recipient of the Hyram Award. The Lodge was called up and Public Grand Honors were given to this well-deserving Brother. Finally, we highlighted the Grand Master’s upcoming trip to Washington D.C. in April of this year and the need to submit a down payment soon.

Good of the order included a presentation by VW David D. of a Mt. Hood Lifetime Membership to WB Will L. The upcoming Installation of Officers for Washington Lodge No. 4 was announced. Our upcoming Master Mason degree at the next Special Meeting was promoted, as well as ticket sales being available for the 2022 7 Masters Table Lodge in December. This led to announcing recent updates to our Lodge website; a calendar of events and an online store. The Lodge was then closed at 9:10 PM, peace and harmony prevailing.
