Mt. Hood Lodge No. 32 met on June 22nd at the Barberton Grange for our Stated Communication on the 1st Degree. As is tradition for our June Stated Meetings, we embraced a relaxed Hawaiian shirt theme which created a laid-back atmosphere complemented by soft jazz playing in the background. The Grange buzzed with activity as Brothers socialized both inside and outside the venue. Some Brothers enjoyed cigars out front while others arrived on motorcycles from Kenton. Brother Ivan M. treated us to a delightful harp performance in the air-conditioned interior. Brother Alex B. curated a Hawaiian-themed meal for the evening, which comfortably accommodated the unexpectedly increased attendance of 45 people.
During the commencement of the meal, the Worshipful Master entered the room, carrying various Certificates of Appreciation and Reprimand. Of particular significance was the Reprimand issued to our Honorary Past Master, WB John T. Our Lodge has certain expectations for Past Masters that, unfortunately, he had not fulfilled. Specifically, he had not uttered a single complaint throughout the entire year. We remain optimistic that he will make the necessary adjustments and fulfill his responsibilities in the upcoming year. In addition to the Reprimand, other certificates were presented:
VW Dave E. – Appreciation: Closing Lodge using Helium gas.
VW Gordon J. – Appreciation: For his judicious issuance of Masonic ‘Speeding Tickets’.
WB Dale V. – Appreciation: For his enthusiastic support for Shrine International.
Br. Tim H. – Appreciation: For sitting pro-tem at almost all positions last year.
Br. Keith K. – Appreciation: For not drinking the Marshall’s bottle while sitting as Tyler.
Br. Sage B. – Appreciation: For opening Lodge as Senior Deacon blindfolded!
Br. Alex B. – Reprimand: For making the Lodge try balut.
Br. Jerramie R. – Reprimand: For stowing equipment after the meeting instead of joining us for our post-meeting toasts.
Br. Gerald W. – Reprimand: For having better vacation stories than the Worshipful Master.
Br. Connor G. – Reprimand: For reducing the size of our Fraternity by creating Masonic Muscle, our weightlifting group.
Lastly, a Certificate of Appreciation was bestowed upon WB Blake P. from Kenton Lodge No. 145, A.F.&A.M. of Oregon. Several members of Mt. Hood Lodge had paid a visit to Kenton Lodge a few months back and “captured” their gavel. Regrettably, Kenton Lodge and Mt. Hood Lodge typically hold their meetings on the same night, making it challenging for us to arrange reciprocal visitations. However, WB Blake went above and beyond by personally visiting us at one of our meetings last month to extend his congratulations to Br. Justin G. on his MM Degree. During that occasion, WB Will offered to return the gavel and forego the customary exchange visit. Admirably, WB Blake declined the gesture, affirming that Kenton Lodge would prefer to “do it right.”
True to his word, WB Blake, along with several brethren from Kenton Lodge, made the journey and contributed to an unforgettable evening. In recognition of their presence, all the visiting Brothers from Kenton Lodge were asked to rise as the Worshipful Master presented WB Blake with a Certificate of Appreciation. During the presentation, the Worshipful Master expressed numerous commendations for their esteemed Lodge and the exemplary character displayed by its members.
As the clock neared 7:30, we bid farewell to all unable to stay for the meeting and proceeded to enter the Grange Hall. Brother Ivan continued to enchant us with his captivating harp melodies, setting a serene atmosphere, while the Brothers settled into their respective seats. Meanwhile, Br. Justin G. made final preparations for his inaugural meeting as the Junior Deacon. Br. Connor diligently attended to some last-minute adjustments of the lesser lights, and a hush fell over the Lodge as all eyes eagerly shifted towards the East.
With a firm rap of the gavel, the Worshipful Master called upon Br. Tim H. to stand and inquired if he had fulfilled his Proficiency in Lodge Management (PiLM). It was decided several months ago at Mt. Hood Lodge that any Officer who successfully completed their PiLM would be enrolled in the Scottish Rite Master Craftsman Program: Symbolic Lodge. Upon Br. Tim’s affirmative response, he was cordially invited to approach, where he would officially open the Lodge and demonstrate his ability in the East.
Following a masterful execution of the Ritual, the Lodge extended a warm welcome to our visitors, including WB Blake P. from Kenton Lodge. With genuine enthusiasm, the Worshipful Master expressed his appreciation and displayed the Kenton Gavel, which had been in the possession of Mt. Hood Lodge. WM Will L. commended its exquisite craftsmanship, perfect balance, and shared his delight in using it over the past few months. Nevertheless, adhering to a cherished tradition observed by Lodges worldwide, the gavel was subsequently returned to its rightful owner.
After the introductions, we proceeded to request updates on Joy, Sickness, and Distress. Numerous Brothers shared their personal triumphs and hardships, fostering an environment of candid sharing and support. During this poignant moment, Br. David H. approached the East and graced the room with a heartfelt song that encapsulated the essence of friendship and togetherness. The emotional resonance lingered in the air, allowing everyone present to absorb the depth of the moment before transitioning to the next agenda item.
Among the communications addressed, we received a letter of gratitude from the Great Strides Foundation, expressing their appreciation for our recent donation. The Treasurer’s Report, on the other hand, encompassed the presentation of routine bills and financial matters for the Lodge’s review.
Following the Treasurer’s Report, proficiency reports were presented by the respective members. Subsequently, Br. Mark P. delivered an engaging presentation on the Esoteric Handbook for the Entered Apprentice Mason. His enlightening discourse offered valuable insights, including notable quotes from both Walter L. Wilmshurst and even a touch of wisdom from the revered Yoda. The amalgamation of these diverse sources contributed to a thought-provoking and memorable session.
Under the agenda item of New Business, a motion was put forth and duly approved to procure a bespoke set of Lodge plates. These specially crafted plates are expected to be available for use by our next meeting in September, adding a touch of distinction to our gatherings. Additionally, we excitedly announced our forthcoming 5th Thursday Fun Night event, which will take place at Venardo’s Circus. This event promises an evening of enjoyment and camaraderie, providing an opportunity for the Brothers to bond outside the usual Lodge setting.
During the meeting, we shared the exciting news of the recent election of MW Steve Martin as the new Grand Master of Masons in Washington. His chosen theme, “Be All In,” was also announced, emphasizing the importance of wholehearted commitment within our Masonic journey. In light of this theme, the Worshipful Master addressed a comment that had been made about the Lodge’s new logo bearing a resemblance to a Boy Scout troop emblem. Embracing the spirit of “Be All In,” the Lodge has decided to embark on a creative initiative by introducing a series of Masonic Merit Badges. Several suggestions were put forth, including the Passport and Pro-Teming Merit Badges.
During the meeting, several upcoming events were announced, including the Gateway Shrine Club’s County Fair Seafood Booth. The club is seeking volunteers for this event, and you can sign up on their website, https://www.gatewayshrineclub.com/.
Following the announcement, the Lodge proceeded with elections for the 2023-2024 Masonic Year. After the votes were tallied, the following Brothers were elected and graciously accepted their respective positions. In celebration of this transition, Mt. Hood Lodge will be hosting an open installation ceremony on September 21st, inviting all interested individuals to join in this special occasion.
- Worshipful Master – Br. Will L.
- Senior Warden – Br. Alex B.
- Junior Warden – Br. Sage B.
- Secretary/Treasurer – VW David D.
After the elections, the Marshall’s Bottle, presented on behalf of WB Todd, took center stage. A brief historical account of John Jameson, not to be confused with J.J. Jameson from Spider-Man, was shared with the attendees. Born in Scotland in 1740, Brother John was initiated into Convivial Lodge No. 202 in Dublin, Ireland. Six years later, he embarked on his journey of distilling liquors, ultimately paving the way for the creation of the iconic Jameson bottles we savor today. This fascinating tale added a touch of intrigue and appreciation to the evening’s proceedings.
During the Good of the Order segment, WB Blake P. and a group of Brothers from Kenton Lodge made their way to the East carrying a large black box. In a delightful gesture, they presented the “Traveling 8-ball,” a symbolic gift that one Lodge passes on to another. The 8-ball comes with a log, documenting the history of all the Lodges that have received it. The Lodge members greeted this gesture with great enthusiasm, applauding warmly as the gift was graciously accepted. Plans are already underway to ensure the smooth transition of the Traveling 8-ball to its next destination, continuing the tradition of sharing among Masonic Lodges.
Just before the closing of the meeting, WB Will took a moment to express his appreciation for VW Dave E.’s invaluable contributions to the Lodge, particularly during his tenure as Senior Warden. Following this commendation, VW Dave was invited to preside over the Lodge’s final closure before going dark for the Summer.
However, a moment of confusion ensued when VW Dave inquired about the customary “In Case You Missed It” segment. Seizing the opportunity, the Master saw merit in summarizing the year’s activities through a song. After consulting with several Brothers, including WB Dick P. who said, “No Way!”, Brother David H. graciously volunteered and assumed his position behind the microphone in the East.
Realizing the need for percussions or drums, the brethren cast quick glances around and surprisingly discovered a complete drum set hidden on the stage. The search for a drummer commenced until VW Dave E. produced a pair of drumsticks from his coat. With the assistance of karaoke music playing through the speakers, the ensemble embarked on a memorable performance, offering a parody rendition of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” cleverly incorporating highlights from the preceding year into the lyrics.
“We didn’t sign the Charter. Lesser lights been burning, since the worlds been turning. We didn’t sign the Charter. No we didn’t sign it, but we’re working by it.”
Amidst resounding applause following the song, VW Dave assumed swift command of the Officers and, after a humorous challenge to WB Will sitting in the West, lead the team in an impressive and proficient manner to bring the meeting to a close. His adept guidance and command resonated throughout the Lodge, leaving a lasting impression on those in attendance.
After the meeting concluded, the Brothers relished in the camaraderie, indulging in the Marshall’s beverage and cigars long into the evening. Amidst the tranquil ambiance under the starlit sky, they exchanged stories, recapped memorable moments from the meeting, and expressed their anticipation for the upcoming Stated Meeting in September. As midnight approached, the last two Brothers bid farewell, peace and harmony prevailing.
